Bolesław [bɔˈlɛswaf] is a village in Olkusz County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Bolesław.[1] It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) west of Olkusz and 43 km (27 mi) north-west of the regional capital Kraków.
History
The village was founded in 1279 by Polish monarch Bolesław V the Chaste and named after him. In 1814, a calamine mine was opened. In 1827, the village had a population of 467, which tripled by the late 19th century.[2] In the late 19th century, there was a brewery and distillery in Bolesław.[2] The village was located on a route connecting Będzin and Olkusz.[2]
